My new book, The Nazaré Notebook, is now available to pre-order.
In November 2010, I travelled to Nazaré to join the North Canyon Project. I carried a small notebook and wrote down what was happening as we worked to understand the waves at Praia do Norte and how we could surf them.
Earlier this year, I found that notebook in a drawer while clearing out a storage container. Its cover was marked with white mould, but inside were the handwritten entries that have become the basis of this book.
The Nazaré Notebook brings those original pages together with my expanded account and photographs taken during that time. It covers the period from 2010 to 2013, including the development of our safety systems, the events surrounding Garrett McNamara’s record wave in November 2011, and my own expeditions beyond Nazaré.
Most of the photographs are my own, taken from within the experience as it unfolded. The book also includes contributions from Titus Haug and Marcus Covell, with artwork and cover design by Fonda Shae. A complete facsimile of the surviving notebook is included at the back.
It has taken a lot of work to bring these pages together, and I’m pleased to finally be able to share them.
